Not only did our PTA knock it out of the park with last week's Multicultural Night, our generous PTA also sponsored two artists to work with several grade levels! Our second, fourth and eighth graders learned about the indigo plant, how the dye is processed, its importance in SC history, and created a "shibori" indigo dyed fabric square with artist Cat Brantley from Sister Moon Studio, while our fifth, sixth and seventh graders took part in a Gullah Experience presented by Corey Alston! Everyone learned new information and really enjoyed the programs! Thank you PTA!!

In addition, we want to recognize and thank Ms Schlick and Ms Blundy for their hard work and dedication to the team! We are so proud of our Mock Trial Team!! Congratulations to Rory O’Hara, James Blundy, Anthony Hampton, Finley McCready, Chloe Selverian, Hattie Wissman, Kira Akst, Sarah Ligon, Claire Roth, Sophie Williams, Poppy Barnett and Tristan Wilhelm!

Several DIS classes were thrilled to listen to Kallyn Long, a local teen author, read her book Cordelia and Me. The story is based on Kallyn's unexpected hearing loss, overcoming challenges, and embracing one's uniqueness. She is an advocate for empowerment and inclusivity and she hopes the book inspires others with differing abilities!

For the upcoming school year, all BCSD schools will use Rooms as their direct communication tools for parents, teachers, athletic coaches, club advisors, etc. Because Rooms is located in the Berkeley County School District mobile app, this streamlines communication and minimizes the number of apps parents and guardians need for communication. If you haven't already, download the BCSD app today and turn on notifications so you never miss a message.

Berkeley County School District (BCSD) has postponed the first day of school to Thursday, August 15, giving teachers and staff more time to prepare and students an extra day of summer break. This decision comes after recent severe weather and flooding prevented access to school buildings for three days, disrupting traditional classroom and school preparation time for teachers and staff. “We value the dedication of our teachers and staff in preparing classrooms and schools, and this additional day will allow them to better prepare to receive more than 38,000 students on Thursday,” said BCSD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon. “Last week, teachers completed virtual professional development and training so now they can focus on classroom and school needs Monday through Wednesday.” School and district offices will be open regular hours, and extracurricular activities and athletic programs will also operate according to their normal schedule. Information and schedules for school specific meet the teacher and grade specific orientation days have been shared with families by school leaders. Dixon added, “We understand that disruptions in schedules are not easy for anyone so we appreciate the understanding of our parents and community as we work to ensure that the first day is the best it can be for students and teachers on Thursday.” Any weather day adjustments necessary as a result of this calendar change will be reviewed and communicated, if needed, at a later date.
